Moisés Castañón Velasquez’s journey to becoming a restaurant owner is one of resilience, hard work, and an unwavering belief in his dreams. Originally from Guatemala, Moisés migrated to the U.S. in 2007 with his cousin in search of a better future.
Determined to build a new life, he started working in event logistics, setting up tents, but he longed for something more fulfilling. Just three months after arriving, he enrolled at City College to improve his English. While walking down Valencia Street one day, he passed by Big Mouth and silently prayed for the opportunity to work there.
In late 2008, Moisés left his job, and fate stepped in—his cousin mentioned that another restaurant was opening. He began training at the original location, and within a week, he was transferred to the new one. Just two days later, the owner saw potential in him and promised to help him grow.
Moisés took this encouragement to heart. He worked tirelessly, seven days a week for three months, proving his dedication and skills. Starting as a dishwasher in 2009, he quickly moved up to cook at the San Bruno location after demonstrating his ability to handle a large-scale event with 250 guests.
In 2014, when the manager of the original location retired, Moisés was transferred back to San Francisco. His hard work, loyalty, and warm presence made him a favorite among customers and staff alike. That same year, the owner had his first conversation with Moisés about business ownership, always encouraging him to think about having his own restaurant.
A decade later, in 2024, the opportunity finally arrived. When Abraham, the restaurant’s owner at the time, faced health challenges, he once again asked Moisés if he was ready to take the next step. With years of experience and a deep love for the community, Moisés knew it was time.
On February 1st, Moisés’s lifelong dream became a reality—he officially became the owner. Honoring the restaurant’s roots, he decided to bring back its original name: Big Bite Burger, the name the community has always known and loved.
Moisés’s story is a testament to perseverance, dedication, and the power of believing in oneself. His journey from dishwasher to owner is an inspiration to all who dream of building something of their own.
