About the event
Refranes or dichos*, in English, are known as sayings or proverbs which represent moral teachings or popular wisdom.
With the arrival of Spanish language in Latin America came the refranes.
According to Herón Pérez Martínez, a recognized paremiologist (one who studies proverbs), the Spanish language with its refranes "took root in American soil, grew and flourished with its own vigor."
In México, as in other Latin American countries, refranes evolved within their new environment, incorporating local indigenous languages, customs, and beliefs.
The refranes that are known today reflect the rich confluence of languages, experiences, wisdom, and worldview of the Mexican people. They are inherited ancestral treasures that belong to the present and to posterity.
The Mayan refrán, A than chicbezic maxech, means "your speaking makes you present."
